Pulse duration is the
headline variable.
“Picosecond” describes how long each pulse lasts — not how much energy it carries. The shorter the pulse, the more the effect stays mechanical (a shockwave that shatters pigment) instead of thermal (heat that spreads into surrounding tissue). That single distinction is the entire clinical argument.
Halving the pulse duration doubles the peak power delivered — with zero change in energy. This is why 250–500 mJ from a true picosecond laser outperforms 1,000+ mJ from a nanosecond Q‑switched laser. Millijoules alone never told the story.
Three lasers.
Three fragment sizes.
Ink only leaves the body when the fragments are small enough for macrophages and the lymphatic system to carry away. Fragment size is decided at the moment of impact.
Large, intact pigment clusters lodged in the dermis. Far too big for the immune system to clear — which is exactly why tattoos are permanent without intervention.
Heat-driven breakdown leaves coarser fragments. More residual ink survives each pass, so the total session count climbs — and every extra pass adds thermal load.
Shockwave fragmentation reduces pigment to fine, sub-micron particles — small enough to clear efficiently. Less residual ink per pass means fewer sessions overall.
LIOB — the same shockwave
that rebuilds collagen.
Focused through the 20× array lens, nuGLOW concentrates energy into micro-zones roughly 20× the density of a standard pico pulse. At that intensity the pulse triggers Laser Induced Optical Breakdown — intra-epidermal plasma formation that generates pressure waves inside the dermis without ablating the surface.
Minute 0. Focused array energy forms LIOB vacuoles. Pressure waves propagate through the dermis, creating controlled micro-injury without a thermal wound.
Minute 10. Those pressure injuries activate the wound-healing signalling cascade — the same one microneedling and fractional lasers chase, reached here without breaching the epidermis.
Hour 24. Dermal inflammatory response initiates fibroblast activity, leading to increased collagen and elastin over the following weeks. No downtime, no ablation.

Pigment absorption is the whole game, and a single-wavelength system leaves both colours and skin types on the table. nuGLOW treats all ink colours across every Fitzpatrick type, and expands to four wavelengths for practices that want the full range on one device.
Every ink colour is treatable on nuGLOW. That single sentence is the difference between a consult you close and one that walks out to find someone who can help — and it's the sentence most platforms in this class can't say.
Because the effect is photomechanical rather than photothermal, coverage doesn't come at the cost of safety. Black ink on Fitzpatrick IV–VI — the single most-declined consult in aesthetics — is a case you take, with lower PIH and scarring risk than a nanosecond device can offer.

Picosecond vs traditional
Q‑switched Nd:YAG.
Q‑switched lasers work. They have for decades. But because a Q‑switched pulse is thousands of times longer, the only lever left to raise peak power is raw energy — which is why manufacturers bolt on a second amplifying rod to push past 1,000 mJ. More total energy over a nanosecond pulse still delivers more heat into surrounding tissue. It narrows the gap in fragmentation. It doesn't close it.
Hard ceiling.
A single Nd:YAG crystal generates and outputs the beam directly. Simpler and cheaper — but total output is capped by what one rod can physically hold.
Brute force.
A second rod re-amplifies the beam after the first (master oscillator + power amplifier), forcing more total energy through because the long pulse can't get there on peak power alone.
Less energy needed.
At 300–500 ps the physics does the work. Shockwave fragmentation reaches sub-micron particle sizes without needing 1,000+ mJ — and without the thermal load that comes with it.
